Tinkering Away

December 1, 2013

km 064Well! The recording has been going somewhat painlessly. Imagine that!? This is our third go around together in the studio and I think we might finally be hitting our stride. We still have a few overdubs to go and then onto editing and mixing. Yeah!

I also realized that in the past year since he’s been with us, I’ve never officially introduced our newest addition to the band. We now have keys! It started out as, “Come out and jam with us!” one night and …. well, the jam session never ended. Gladly, I’d like to introduce our key master, Patrick. He went to town on all the different pianos available at the studio. He especially took a liking to the Petrof grand piano. Man, it sounded amazing. We’re even showcasing his vocal and songwriting chops in one of the songs.

We’re itching to get the new tunes out there but – patience. That’s what we keep telling ourselves. So I am off for a few days to visit my really cool aunt in the States, while they do the rest of the lead guitar overdubs this week. Then it’s acoustics and background vocals when I return. I’m hopeful to start some new writing again. Being away always seems to clear the cobwebs from my head. It’s like a new, clean canvas set on the easel just waiting to be splattered with some kind of new idea.

We’ll see!

Non Fin

December 31, 2011

I’ve been struggling over the last few days on how to begin this entry. As the year comes to a close this evening, I am slowly emerging from the darkness that has been my existence for the past few months.

I’ve made many attempts to write but have felt helpless at having absolutely nothing to offer. My obsession with inspiration has left me pretty dry this last little while. Hence the reason why there haven’t been any entries for the past few months. It’s odd, I guess. This intrigue I have with what fuels or ignites the creative. This intrigue, or some would say obsession has left me void of any of my own. Although, I’ve been told that there are other atmospheric factors that have aided in shrouding me with some of this darkness.

But! I’ve been working on getting myself back on track. It’s not over yet ’cause the fat lady ain’t sung her final aria just yet. (That’s my way of poking a little fun at myself.) Feeling lost in life is quite the experience. It’s not like being lost in a strange city because there are always resources you can rely on, like signs, other people, buildings and landmarks etc. When you feel lost in life, there are no helpful signs to guide you. There are no other people who can steer you in the exact direction you need to be going. It’s all on you to try to find your way out. It’s like trying to climb through a cloud…

So here we are on the crest of the final wave and I am feeling the light slowly flicker again. We had a show a few weeks back and it was good to get back on the stage and to feel that support from friends and a few new fans.  Fans. I’m so uncomfortable with that term. I don’t believe that we have fans. I believe that we have new-found friends, who enjoy what we are doing. It was nice.

We’ve released our EP – THIS IS NOT HERE digitally. Come hell or high water, we just couldn’t tweak it anymore to our liking so we hope that you like what’s out so far. The boys and I have started making plans for our next song set to record. We are pretty pumped and looking froward to sharing these new tunes with everyone. We’re just working out the kinks with schedules etc and hope that it won’t drag out for a year like the last one did.

All in all, I leave 2011 with a weak smile. Although there was much struggle between dark and light, I am so thankful I could experience it because this battle has taught me that I still have strength and I’ve still got the embers of passion burning on the coals, ready to explode into life again. So this is not the end.

Let a new chapter begin……

The Return

August 24, 2011

Wow! The summer has just slipped away from me! And now we’re slowing inching toward its end. Bummer. You always know that when the CNE sets up in town, it’s the beginning of the end. Sure it’s one of this cities’ greatest loves and creates the best memories of childhood but it also marks the end of warm weather as we know it and the ever impending entry of Fall which seems to turn too quickly into Winter.

I’ve been extremely negligent in writing the past few months. Since getting back from Hawaii, I’ve pretty much hit the ground running. From or to what, I’m not quite sure; as this EP seems to be the longest musical project in the history of putting out silly EPs. That’s what I feel like it is now. Silly. It’s taken far longer than it should have to get it out. Perhaps we were just too picky on getting things to sound just right. Good old ego getting in the way.
Whatever the case, I am hopeful that we will be releasing it in the next few weeks and getting some shows back on the road! Yeah!

In the meantime, I’ll post the rest of our Hawaii entries and keep you up to date on the Summer trip to Paradise.

Hope you enjoy!

Two Tickets to Paradise

June 12, 2011

In twelve hours I will be boarding a plane to Hawaii. The timing couldn’t be any better. Things have been winding down as we are getting the EP into the mastering process. Our drummer boy is off to Greece for a few weeks and I thouhgt this would be the perfect time to take the offer of a friend, who was looking for a travel buddy. It’s just what I need to rejuvenate my soul.

A  little sun and laughter and fun will do me some good. Just get a fresh, clear head to come back and get the final details in place for promoting and releasing the record. Finally!

It’s funny because, we’ve all said at different times, that we’ve since written quite a few songs that we now feel are way better. But isn’t that so typical? Your latest song creation has become your current favourite.

We are excited, though, about getting some feedback from our little recording project. So…………….

Stay tuned!

Day 317 – Down For the Count

March 1, 2011

Well, February was a bit of a write-off for writing, it seems. I’ve literally not written any ideas in my notebook this whole month. It hasn’t helped that I’ve been sick for most of it. I’m in my third week of fighting whatever it is that I have. It started as a flu which I aggressively fought, to make it through our gig but has since turned into a lingering, nasty cold. We’ve attempted to do a few open mics but have had to cancel due to my sinuses being completely stuffed up and a horrible cough that I’m sure would wake the dead. I wish it would be gone already. I’m sick of being sick! It’s so unproductive!

So here we are into a new month and we’re down to the final count down in my year-long project. I am hoping that great inspiration will ensue this month. We have finally settled on the mixing and producing team for our EP and I am keeping my fingers crossed that we will be on schedule (my predicted schedule) to have an official release at the end of April or in early May as that will coincide with the culmination of my blog project. Wow, there just seems to be so many things to do. You really need to have a team of people running around doing all this stuff for you. But! We don’t have a Rock Star budget so we have to be happy with what we can do and with the fact that we can do any of it at all.

Speaking of Rock Stars, my other favourite up-and-coming band is in town. I would call them a local band but they are actually from England. I was lucky enough to meet these lads when they came for a visit two years ago at the invitation of very good friends of mine. They found these guys singing at The Cavern in Liverpool, when they were on

The Targets - Sam, Conrad and Jess

vacation. Long story short, they’ve been over a few times now and have become friends, which is why they feel like they are local to me. They are like little brothers, actually. In any case, they are a kick-ass Punk band who are on their way to being super stars. I’m looking forward to catching a few of their shows while they’re in town. And in case you are interested in checking them out, they are known as The Targets and they are well worth making the trip out to see them while they’re in town. But you better hurry. They are only here for a few days before going to New York for a few shows.

Hopefully, I will finally be healed of all my sinus/cold/flu agony and can get on with the business of Rock and Roll.

Peace out.

Day 224 – Gone Baby Gone

November 28, 2010

Don't think this guy stole my rims but stranger things have happened!

So yesterday, as I’m leaving for the studio, I find all four of my rims missing from my car! I almost laughed in disbelief. Right from my own parking lot! And I was parked next to an Audi! Not one other car was touched. I guess someone was really desperate for Mazda rims. Very annoying. My car looks so naked. I guess I should be thankful they didn’t take the tires and all! I’ve heard stories like that.

I’ve lived in this neighbourhood and have never had a problem and now I find no rims. Unbelievable! Needless to say that I was definite I wanted to record Just Ain’t Fair as one of our songs for the EP. The second day of recording went well, although I’m sure all would agree that the night before was oddly magical. Recording can really be tiring, I realized. In the past I’d worked solo with a producer and we’d work on tracks in short snippets of time. But to block off two days straight will wear you out.

Good news is the drum tracks are all down. We’re going back next week for another two days, maybe three to lay down bass and rhythm guitar and maybe some vocals. At least that will be done before I fly off to the UK the following week. Lead guitar can be laid while I’m away and I can always finish off final vocals when I get back. The goal is to have a product ready for release by April or May of next year. That’s when my 365 day writing challenge will conclude. It will be a nice way to celebrate the result of this project. Here’s hoping.

On that note, it’s time to hit the hay. It’s been a long couple of days.

Until tomorrow. Sweet dreams.
